Momentum (Christ – centred, Spirit – empowered, Mission – focused)
Before The Christian and Missionary Alliance in Canada was a denomination, we were an ecumenical movement.
A.B. Simpson described us as a “further in and further out” movement—further in to “the heights and depths of the life of Christ” and “further out into all the aggressive work” of missions.
“The Alliance was has its place and calling to lead the people of God further on into all the heights and depths of the life of Christ.”
Simpson articulates six summarizing points about our movement in The Challenge of Missions.
- “This movement stands primarily as a witness…to the living God, to a religion which is wholly divine, a life that is wholly divine, and a church which is supernatural in its nature….”
- “This movement stands for a living and indwelling Christ and the power of His resurrection to make and keep us holy….”
- “This movement stands for the blessed hope of the Lord’s coming as the goal of the Christian age and the remedy for all earth’s wrongs.”
- “This movement stands particularly for the great work of worldwide evangelism.
This movement “stands particularly for the great work of worldwide evangelism. [It] is our supreme trust.” - “This movement stands for a commitment to reach the most neglected fields, to avoid the beaten tracks of other laborers, to press on to the regions beyond…to preach the Gospel where Christ has not been named.”
- “This movement stands for a spirit of self-sacrifice, adjustment, adaptation, and single-hearted love for people.”
As we live life and face challenging decisions, may the underlying passion of our hearts resonate with the call to go “further in and further out.”
It is no small task to set our hearts and minds to pray for revival, to allow our hearts to be so broken by the darkness of our world that we will agonize in prayer, pleading to God,
“‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her’” (Luke 10:41-42).
